UPSC ESE 2027 Notification Out: Apply Online for 480 Engineering Services Posts

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has officially released the notification for the Engineering Services Examination (ESE), 2027 (Notice No. 02/2027-ENGG.). This national-level recruitment drive invites eligible engineering graduates to fill approximately 480 Group-A and Group-B vacancies across key engineering cadres of the Government of India.

Online applications are open from 16th September 2026 to 6th October 2026 (till 6:00 PM) on the official UPSC portal.

UPSC ESE 2027 Recruitment Overview

Participating Engineering Disciplines & Departments

Recruitment will be conducted across four major categories:

• Category I: Civil Engineering: Central Engineering Service, Central Engineering Service (Roads), Survey of India Group 'A', Central Water Engineering Service, Indian Skill Development Service, IRMS (Civil/Stores), Indian Defence Service of Engineers (IDSE), AEE in MES, and BRES.

• Category II: Mechanical Engineering: Indian Naval Material Management Service, Defence Aeronautical Quality Assurance Service (DAQAS), IRMS (Mech/Stores), IDSE, Central Power Engineering Service, Central Water Engineering Service, GSI, and BRES.

• Category III: Electrical Engineering: Central Electrical & Mechanical Engineering Service, Indian Naval Armament Service, IRMS (Electrical/Stores), CPES, DAQAS, IDSE, and Indian Skill Development Service.

• Category IV: Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering: Indian Radio Regulatory Service (IRRS), Indian Telecommunications Service (ITS), Junior Telecom Officer (JTO Group 'B'), CPES, IRMS (S&T/Stores), and Indian Naval Armament Service.

Eligibility Criteria

1. Educational Qualification

• A candidate must hold a Degree in Engineering (B.E. / B.Tech) in the relevant discipline from a recognized University or Institution incorporated by an Act of Parliament.

• Candidates who have passed Sections A & B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India), or the Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India) (enrolled prior to 31.05.2013), are also eligible.

• M.Sc. degree or equivalent with Wireless Communication, Electronics, Radio Physics, or Radio Engineering is acceptable for specified posts in INAS and IRRS.

• Final Year Candidates: Candidates appearing in their final qualifying engineering degree examination are provisionally eligible to apply.

2. Age Limit (as on 01.01.2027)

• Minimum Age: 21 years

• Maximum Age: 30 years

• The candidate must have been born between 2nd January 1997 and 1st January 2006.

• Upper Age Relaxations:

  • SC / ST Candidates: Up to 5 years

  • OBC Candidates: Up to 3 years

  • PwBD Candidates: Up to 10 years

  • Central Government Servants (Departmental): Up to 35 years

  • Ex-Servicemen: As per central government rules

Application Fee & Payment Mode

• Payment Mode: Net Banking, Visa/Master/RuPay Credit/Debit Card, or UPI.

Selection Process & Scheme of Examination

The UPSC Engineering Services Examination consists of three successive stages:

1. Stage I: Preliminary Examination (500 Marks - Objective Type)

   • Paper-I: General Studies and Engineering Aptitude (2 Hours, 200 Marks)

   • Paper-II: Discipline-Specific Engineering Paper (3 Hours, 300 Marks)

   • Negative Marking: 1/3rd (0.33) marks deducted for every incorrect response.

2. Stage II: Main Examination (600 Marks - Conventional Type)

   • Paper-I: Discipline-Specific Engineering (3 Hours, 300 Marks)

   • Paper-II: Discipline-Specific Engineering (3 Hours, 300 Marks)

3. Stage III: Personality Test / Interview (200 Marks)

   • Assessing leadership qualities, initiative, analytical application, and integrity.
